Israel dramatically escalated its attacks on Iran on Saturday, striking key oil and gas facilities including the massive South Pars gas field the world’s largest. The energy sector strikes came after a night of intense reciprocal attacks between the two nations. Israel and Iran continued mutual attacks throughout Saturday and into Sunday, marking an unprecedented level of open hostilities.
The IDF hit multiple targets across Iran on Friday, including uranium enrichment sites, while also killing several senior military commanders and scientists in targeted assassinations. Iran retaliated by firing dozens of ballistic missiles into Israel. The IDF struck several energy sites, including a refinery in South Pars—the world’s largest natural gas field—and an oil depot in Tehran. Iran launched more missiles at Tel Aviv, some hitting apartment blocks, and also attacked Haifa, where an oil refinery was reportedly struck.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has “vowed to strike every target” necessary to eliminate the “threat” from Iran. On Friday, Israeli jets bombed multiple targets across Iran, including a uranium enrichment center in Natanz, and carried out targeted assassinations of several senior military commanders and scientists. Iran retaliated by firing dozens of ballistic missiles into Israel.
Following the escalation, Oman has announced the cancellation of planned US-Iran nuclear talks.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes, dubbed Operation Rising Lion, aimed to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran condemned the attack as unprovoked and suspended nuclear talks with the US, with the latest round of negotiations scheduled for Sunday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump have discussed the crisis in a 50-minute phone call, during which they reportedly agreed on the possibility of restarting negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, according to Putin’s foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov. Israel launched its strikes one day after the international nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, accused Iran of violating its non-proliferation obligations. Iran rejected the allegations as politically motivated.
Although the US insisted it was not involved, President Donald Trump endorsed the Israeli operation. Russia condemned Israel and called for de-escalation.
