This comment is awaiting moderation. href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/moderation.shtml#appear" target="_blank">Explain. Could I please point out that moving the clocks makes NO difference to the amount of daylight just when it is, therefore these terrible northerners are not trying to reduce the amount of daylight just trying to have it at a sensible time of the day. sunset an hour later still makes the rush hour dark in winter anywhere in Britain.

  • I can hardly believe that the government consider this even remotely worth spending time and money on; this and the proposal for double summer time. Those of us of a certain age have seen all this before. Please lets have some original ideas! As Easter, in late March/early April, is traditionally the start of the UK tourist season, I fail to see how a BH in April would lengthen the season. Many communities now organise festivals that boost their local tourist industry over the May Day weekend, e.g. Rochester Sweeps and Hastings Jack o' the Green. Moving the BH certainly wouldn't benefit their communities or economies.

  • Too many Bank Holidays in the Spring, so October sounds more sensible and useful. Shame the government is wasting a Bank Holiday on some wedding at a time when we don't need it. i do not think that the mayday holiday should be scrapped give the british people anoyjer holiday, the irish have one holiday a month

  • Don't look back to single past glories, (such as Trafalgar), pivotal though they have been to our nation. People (like my Dad and uncle)lost their lives for Britain in many wars, and they are still doing so. If we need to celebrate something very British, let it be a Veterans Holiday, on St George's Day. Let us honour them, alive and not, and let us remember the common debt we owe them all. Lots of countries have Ascension Day as a holiday, even if they don't outwardly appear to be especially religious. And as it's a Thursday, they take the Friday off as well.

  • Do tourists really plan their trips to the UK around Bank Holidays? October is a much better idea for a Bank Holiday, breaking up the time between August and Christmas. Much as it would be good to celebrate our Patron Saint, as do many other countries, often St Georges Day (23rd April) will fall near to Easter (as it does this year) so it would be a wasted Bank Holiday. Why we ever needed 2 Bank holidays in May I will never know.
