Our village has held the Kimpton May Festival over the 3 days of the first bank holiday in May and this year will be the 47th. No other village in England has a similar event and as well as bringing all the community together, we raise thousands of pounds for local groups and charities. Losing the May Day holiday would mean the end of a wonderful tradition. • May Day is our oldest holiday but there were no May Day holiday until a Labour government invented it in the 1970'sThe Tories hated it so want to change it for good. Parliament had more Tories in Commons so change on holidays likely to approve but could the Lords approve it too?The best way is to let people decide, not some clueless Tories! October is a much better idea for a Bank Holiday, breaking up the time between August and Christmas. Much as it would be good to celebrate our Patron Saint, as do many other countries, often St Georges Day (23rd April) will fall near to Easter (as it does this year) so it would be a wasted Bank Holiday. Why we ever needed 2 Bank holidays in May I will never know.

  • For heaven's sake. There are so many things which need changing so why pick on this one. The May Bank Holiday falls at a time when there are reasonably long hours and bright weather. October could be dark and dull. St George's Day is close to the May Bank Holiday anyway. Go and sort out something that needs changing. The 1st of May - known as Beltaine - has been celebrated in our country for over a thousand years. A festival celebrating 'the rights of spring, fertility and new beginnings, a festival that has inspired poets, writers, artists, dancers and musicians internationally. Surely that is reason enough to give over 1 day for its continuance?I agree that we should add an 'extra' holiday in October!

  • I know this may seen petty but I don't want to loose the May day Bank holiday because it is the weekend my husband and I met and the weekend I got married I always class this as our Bank holiday weekend. Nearly Nine years this year and planning a 10th Wedding Anniversary bank holiday weekend for next year. Why change it? why not add another bank holiday in the October. It is not just people in Scotland who are not keen on messing about with the clocks. I live in Southern England and well remember the clock changing experiment in the late 1960's when it meant going to work in the dark and still coming home in the dark .Nothing more depressing. The tourism industry shouldn't take precedence over the quality of life of the people of Britain.

  • If I were a foreign tourist I'd avoid UK Bank holidfays to avoid the queues. With the fuss made by the right wing Tories when Mayday was made a Bank Holiday its obviously political dogma dressed up, and they think we are so stupid we wont see through it. Mayday is the time to mark the ancient festival of Beltane and goes way back, its not about military parades in front of old men in podiums. My birthday is 1st May. Of course I want to keep that Bank Holiday! I also like the idea of St George's day as an English holiday. This would be like Christmas, and not be on the same day of the week. Another Bank Holiday in October is a good idea. Easter, St George's Day and May Day are clustered together, so a break in August and then October would be reasonable. What about gloomy February?
