San Bernardino shooting: 14 victims named by police – latest updates San Bernardino shooting: 14 victims named by police – latest updates

Madden is asked about the officers who responded to the shooting. He replied by talking more widely about police officers and the job they do:
You know, we’ve taken a lot of hits lately, some justified, much of it not justified.
And it takes a toll – it takes a toll on all cops. Because it’s hard being labelled, hard being branded as being a rogue.
I guarantee you that no cop comes into this job with the mindset that ‘oh great, now I have ultimate power to be corrupt and to violate people’s rights’.
There are cops who go astray. But overwhelmingly the vast majority of officers – I’m talking 99.5% of the officers – go out and they do the job and protect the public.
And yesterday just reminded me of that and it just solidified that again in my heart … and for that I’m thankful.

Madden: It was pretty clear … when we saw the severity and the amount of carnage … that this wasn’t just a rogue individual.
There was something more.
But he says he doesn’t know if the suspects left any kind of manifesto.
2.03am GMT02:03
Madden says initially survivors did not want to leave the conference hall, and had to be persuaded to come with police officers. They were fearful, he said.
He is asked how he and his colleagues felt in the moment:
These people have already dealt with enough. The last thing they need to see is police officers panicking.
He said it was incredibly noisy inside the building, with many alarms going off.
It was hard to get information from survivors, he said, as people were very panicked.
The scene inside the room was surreal, he says:
There was a Christmas tree in there. All of the tables were decorated for a Christmas party. It just seems so senseless.
2.00am GMT02:00
Madden is being questioned by reporters now.
He says he just did the job he was supposed to do.
People call the police because there’s tragedy going on, he says.
We have to deal with it.

First responder tells of 'carnage … pure panic'
Mike Madden, one of the first responders, speaks now. He was the first officer on the scene on Wednesday.
He says he could tell from the tone of the dispatcher’s voice that this was a “real event”.
I realised as I was getting closer that I was one of the very first units there … Just out of pure luck that I happened to pull into the right location.
We had every belief at that time that we had people still actively being shot inside of the building.
Madden was preparing to assemble a unit to go in and engage the perpetrators.
There were victims who were obviously deceased outside the conference room …
As we entered into the conference room, the situation was surreal.
Officers are prepared for such situations, he says, but “it was all of that and more”.
It was unspeakable, the carnage we were seeing … the pure panic on the face of those individuals.
Around fifty people were evacuated at this point, he says.
Our goal at that time had to be locating the shooters.
As other officers arrived, Madden said he was able to “pull back” and assist the victims.
At this stage, he says, there were conflicting reports about the number of shooters and whether they were still on the scene.
When we entered there was … the smell of fresh gunpowder in the air.
1.54am GMT01:54
The police are now speaking at a news conference.
California governor Jerry Brown says “we face a real threat” but agencies are working together.
My concern is to make sure everything that can be done is being done.
He says the priority is to ensure public safety.
Police chief Jarrod Burguan shows some images of the crime scene showing weapons and the suspect vehicle.
He says the shooting took place at a department for public health event – a training session that was leading on to a Christmas party:

We continue to learn more about the 14 victims, who were formally identified today:
Damian Meins
Meins, 58, an environmental health worker, was married to Trenna Meins, the principal of the Sacred Heart parish school in Rancho Cucamonga.
A neighbor, Jim Harris, told the Guardian that Meins was “a fantastic man, very personable”.
Meins was hosting the Christmas party, according to a friend’s Facebook posting: “Please keep his wife, Trenna, family and friends in your prayers and hearts. God bless us all in these difficult times.”
Michael Raymond Wetzel
Wetzel, 37, an environmental health supervisor, had three children by his first marriage and three by his second to Renee.
A staff member of the Church of the Woods in Lake Arrowhead said Wetzel was a member of the congregation. “It’s just a devastating situation. Mike is just one of the most genuinely fabulous people I’ve ever met.”
Larry Kaufman
Also named as Daniel Kaufman, he ran the Coffee N More cafe in building 3 of the targeted centre and trained developmentally disabled clients who worked there.
Described as a gregarious free spirit who adored horror films, Kaufman, who was 42, had been raised by an aunt and uncle after his parents died.
His boyfriend, Ryan Reyes, had an agonised 22-hour wait for news punctuated by false hope: a report that Kaufman had been wounded in the arm and would survive.
