Ryan Reyes, the partner of Daniel Kaufman, one of the 14 victims, has been talking about his loss.
Speaking to CNN, Reyes said Wednesday had begun as normal:
I took him to work … He text me like he usually would, on his break … sending me some pictures.
Kaufman, who was also known as Larry, ran the Coffee N More cafe in building 3 of the targeted centre and trained developmentally disabled clients who worked there.
Around noon, Reyes said he received a text message from his sister alerting him to the shooting.
I immediately tried to call Daniel, tried to text Daniel.
He had no news of his partner’s whereabouts for many hours, before a call from Kaufman’s aunt brought confirmation that he was one of the victims.
I immediately broke down and went into hysterics.
Reyes said Kaufman was “the person that always has a smile”:
Daniel was one of those people that everyone liked … always funny, always creative.
The man could have a 30-minute conversation with the cashier [at the store] about his cats!
