"It looks to me like they are going to abandon people" - that's Home Secretary Alan Johnson's feeling about the Conservatives' manifesto mantra. He does acknowledge, however, that the Tories "are in the lead" at the moment. "We have a highly controlled system of immigration," Mr Johnson says, but "the problem on the doorsteps" is that people don't always know about it. On the issue of legal aid to ex-MPs facing expenses charges, the home secretary says Labour have made reforms - yet to be implemented - to make such assistance means-tested, but the Conservatives actually opposed those changes.
