The town hall debates remind us of a time when the only way candidates had of reaching a mass audience was attending public meetings. In another flashback to an earlier era in politics, the Liberal Party - not the modern Lib Dems, formed by the merger of the bulk of the old Liberal Party and SDP - has launched its manifesto. It wants an end to the Trident nuclear deterrent system and a reduction in government centralisation, among other policies. It's that time of the day when we take a step back from the day-to-day rough and tumble of politics and look at the big issue facing voters. Yes, the BBC's glamorous fashion insider Claire Williams has jetted in from Milan to bring us Tiewatch. Putting down her vodka and tonic for a second, she notes: "Gordon Brown has proven to be leading the political fashion pack today - as Clegg and Cameron follow his lead with all three out and about in purple ties. Brown's is a delicate mauve colour, Cameron is wearing an electric violet, very modern number, whilst Clegg models a serious and sombre aubergine neck-piece.
