The attack came shortly after the Russian defence ministry issued a warning to Kyiv residents that it was preparing to hit targets in the capital. The 40 mile-long convoy pictured in satellite images has been hampered by broken down vehicles, according to analysts.
Meanwhile Russian troops are trying to surround the city, and a long convoy of Russian military vehicles is heading south towards the capital, reaching the edge of Hostomel, the airport to the west. But the capital city has faced multiple attacks from the air.
The airport has been the scene of fierce fighting and has changed hands multiple times in the past few days, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). On Tuesday, Russian troops fired on TV Tower in Kyiv, killing five people and taking some broadcasts off air.
Russian forces arrived near Obolon on the outskirts of Kyiv on Friday, but so far have not advanced into the centre of the capital. Hostomel airport has been the scene of fierce fighting and has changed hands multiple times in the past few days, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The Ukrainian military says Russian troops have repeatedly tried to storm the outskirts of the capital without success. Russian forces arrived near Obolon on the outskirts of Kyiv on Friday and clashes in north-western Kyiv were reported at the weekend.

Russia's attack has intensified on Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, in the past 48 hours. The Ukraine military says Russian paratroopers have now landed in Kharkiv, following heavy aerial bombardment of the city in recent days.
Missiles and rockets hit the city centre on Tuesday, after days of heavy bombing, killing dozens of people. On Wednesday, the city's mayor said the heavy shelling had killed at least 21 people and wounded more than 100 others.

Russian forces have made a rapid advance from Crimea and on Tuesday were pushing east, along the Sea of Azoz coast, to Mariupol. Russian forces have made a rapid advance from Crimea and pushed west towards Kherson and east towards Mariupol.
There are reports Kherson in the west is surrounded and Russian troops are moving through the city streets. Its troops were said to have entered Kherson on Tuesday night, with Russia's defence ministry claiming it had captured the southern city on Wednesday morning.
The port city of Berdyansk is said to have fallen to Russian troops and there has been heavy fighting around the neighbouring port of Mariupol. In Mariupol, Ukraine's main trading port, the mayor said there had been heavy shelling as Russian troops tried to encircle the city.
